Executioner

Inked with calligraphy pen on copier paper. Drawn in 1993.

We learn to use the calligraphy pen for art lessons in secondary one and I thought I might be cool to try drawing with it. This artwork is the outcome.

Executioner’s character design was loosely plagarised from Marvel’s Dark Hawk. I created him as a tragic character who has to hide behind a mask because of his disfigured, hideous face – something like the Phantom of the Opera.

Rampage

One of those big-muscled characters who moves slowly, but is huge on raw brawn. The name, Rampage, is apt for a giant ape like this.

Razor

Again, this follows the same drawing style as Crimson Phantom. Not much thought went into creating this character. The superhero name is lame and so is the lame razor costume. Not too sure what he can do other than running around and cutting people with razor blades.

Kinetic

Again, this follows the same drawing style as Crimson Phantom. The concept behind this character was energy transfer in movement, something we learn in secondary one science. This guy is named Kinetic because he can move very fast and impact huge amount of energy when he rams into the bad guys.

Launcher

The drawing style follows that in my previous entry – Crimson Phantom. Did you notice the typewritten fonts at the top? I just got my first typewriter (PC was still not common then) and was very excited on being able to generate ‘professional’ looking letterings on my artwork.

Back to the character design – Launcher is a cyborg who can launch missiles and bullets from his arms, hence the name. Nothing really special lah, it came from the imagination of a secondary one boy mah.

Crimson Phantom

The name rhythms doesn’t it? I was quite proud of it myself when I thought of the name. This “original character” was modified from Marvel’s Doom 2099.

I like the effect of mixing colour pencil with minimal ink strokes and will continue to do a few more pieces of artwork similar as this.

Cut Dragon

One of the first truly feminine female character I created. Before this, I drew mostly male characters or female characters with bulging biceps. This was something different, with heavy manga-influence whereby a cutesy, frail looking girl can still be paired with a giant weapon.

四大魔王: Witchcraft, Slog, Lord Atlantis and Hellspont

Ink on copier paper. Drawn in 1993 when I was in Secondary One.

Four characters I created as the ultimate super villains in the A-team universe. Collectively know as the 四大魔王 (literally translated as “Four Demon Kings”), each of them controls an aspect of Mother Earth.

Withcraft is the queen of sorcery; Slog rules the soil and the underground; Lord Atlantis rules the oceans, seas and lakes; and Hellspont rules the sky.

Josh

Josh is one of my favourite original character in the A-Team universe. He was conceptualised when muscle dudes like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone still ruled the movie box office with their bulging biceps and penchants for heavy machinery coupled with giant weapons. You get the picture. :

The Goddamn Force

Inspired by Marvel’s Cable and the New Mutants, I created the Goddamn Force – a ragtag super hero mercenary force who believes the means always justify the ends, even if they have to play dirty.
